Koude is een emotie

Scotland08_151Schotland – 29 januari t/m 3 februari 2008 – Waarom moeten we toch altijd zo nodig in het stormseizoen naar de Cairngorms? Ook in 2008 zijn we vrijwel letterlijk van de berg geblazen, onze plannen (en onze tent) geheel in duigen… Gelukkig hangt onze groep van flexibiliteit aan elkaar, zodat we elke tegenslag hebben kunnen ombouwen in wederom een fantastische winterhike. Ditmaal zonder Munro’s te hebben beklommen, al denk ik dat er helemaal niemand een Munro heeft beklommen gedurende deze onstuimige dagen. Continue reading

Weerbericht van die dag: It has been a stormy day with snow showers on very strong South-East winds. Heavy drifting has led to deep accumulations of very weakly bonded snow building on West through North to North-East aspects above 550 metres. Shooting cracks and slumping was noted on a shallow angled Westerly aspect at 555 metres. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). COMMENT: Severe conditions in the hills today. Continue reading

Expeditieleden Cairngorms 2007The winds have been strong from the South-East and summit temperatures have remained very cold. Snow showers and heavy drifting have led to deep accumulations of soft slab developing on West through North to North-East aspects above 700 metres.  On a North-West aspect at 1050 metres tests showed a very weakly bonded snowpack and spontaneous shooting cracks were also noted. The avalanche hazard is High (Category 4). COMMENT: Maelstrom conditions on the hill today. Continue reading

Weerbericht voor die dag: It has been a cold day with snow showers and a strong South-Easterly wind. The lying fresh snow of previous days has been transported by the wind on to lee aspects and has formed weakly bonded windslab accumulations on mainly Westerly to Northerly aspects above 700 metres. Field tests on a Westerly aspect at 1100 metres produced very easy failures in the snowpack. The avalanche hazard is Considerable (Category 3). COMMENT: Very cold but good and wintry. Het oorspronkelijke plan
Ons oorspronkelijke plan zou ons een groot aantal Munro’s opleveren. Te beginnen met Braeriach, vervolgens Sgor an Lochain Uaine (Angel’s Peak), dan Cairn Toul en eventueel Devil’s Point. Vervolgens via de Corrour Bothy over naar de andere kant van de Lairig Ghru naar Derry Cairngorm en Ben MacDui en vandaar weer terug naar Aviemore. Continue reading
